Save Ios To Sponsor Summer School on Marine Biodiversity

In August 2023 , Save Ios will sponsor the 5th consecutive ” Summer School for Marine Biodiversity “, which will take place in Ios. It will be hosted in one of the two traditional houses overlooking the magnificent bay of Tris Klissies , owned by a member of the Association.

The “Summer School for Marine Biodiversity” was created and is held on an annual basis by the ” Hellenic Biodiversity Observatory “, due to the immense need for knowledge and experience of the subject in the field. The 1st edition of the Summer School took place in 2018 in Southeastern Pelion, the 2nd in 2019 in Halkidiki, the 3rd took place online in 2021 due to the Covid pandemic and the 4th in Pagasitikos. The aim of the Summer School events is the best possible recording of the biodiversity of as many regions of the country as possible and, for this reason, every year they are planned in a different region.

Ios is under serious environmental threat due to irreparable alteration of landscapes, beaches and coastal fronts, ridges and streambeds. These changes are negatively impacting the island’s  natural ecosystem and biodiversity. The Summer School will also help record much needed data on the island’s marine and terrestrial species.
