A five-star hotel called Calilo has been built in the “Raches Pappas” area of Ios. In the part of the area near the sea there was a protected wetland, which was fed by streams coming from the surrounding mountain slopes. This wetland has now been destroyed, and streams that fed it have been filled. The wetland and streams area has been converted into a hotel.
Beach & Wetland
The first photos show the enchanting landscape before the operations. The wetland was a lively and deep lake, with fish, and was fed by streams coming from the surrounding mountain slopes. The remaining photos show the landscape after the construction of the hotel. The wetland is dead, streams have been dug up, and the landscape has been radically altered.
The beach is no longer accessible to the public, or access is difficult or paid.
Papa beach is a public beach and therefore access to it should be available to all. Unfortunately, to go there by foot using the public path is no longer possible; the gate in the below photo is now locked and the path has been pretty much eradicated by the property owner.
